National Volunteer Week

Give Happy, Live Happy was the theme for National Volunteer Week, held during 11-17 May.

We are proud of our team whom volunteer for local organisations; sporting clubs, emergency services, charities, boards, events and even the Bendigo Theatre Company! Staff at AFS are encouraged to volunteer their time, as it is enriches them personally and professionally.

During volunteer week, we spoke with Helen Yorsten, Manager of the Bendigo Volunteer Resource Centre about the myriad opportunities available in the local community. The Bendigo Volunteer Resource Centre offers support to connect volunteers with organisations across Central Victoria.

There are opportunities to contribute regularly or spontaneously, inside or outside, corporate or individual, skilled or unskilled.

Helen highlighted the issue that those preparing for retirement usually contact their accountant or financial adviser to ensure they are looked after financially. Often new retirees neglect their health and wellbeing by failing to plan some day-to-day activities to keep their mind active.

“An impending retiree who has worked in an office or managerial role may want to act as a mentor to a local not-for-profit organisation or those who are just starting out in business” suggested Helen.

“This could involve a regular meeting in a café, which could be someone’s ideal view of retirement” adds Helen.

Whether it’s one hour of your time or an ongoing commitment, it’s easy to share your skills and interests to give happy and live happy.
